Choosing a Garage Door – Where to Start

When you decide you need a new door for your garage, it is going to be a major purchase. Garage doors are enormous, heavy and intricate, so you don’t want to make the wrong decision. If you choose a quality door, it can last for years without causing you any problems, and it will look brilliant as well. There is nothing quite like a new garage door to lift the appearance of a property.

When you begin thinking about a new door, you must do all of your research thoroughly. It is too important a decision to take lightly. If you do, you will inevitably be disappointed, both in the design and the quality of what you choose. You should ensure you know what you will be getting by doing plenty of research and, where possible, going to see garage doors in person. This could be in a showroom, in a shop, or by looking at someone else’s!

How to choose a garage door – what to look for

When you choose a new garage door, it could be hard to know when to start, unless you know exactly what you are looking for. These are some ideas to help get you started:

  • Price. Make sure you understand how much different types of garage door cost. This will help you to establish what you will get for your budget. If you are at all unsure about quality, it is best not to go for that option – it will only disappoint you.
  • Decide on the finish you would like. Doors come in many different materials, from solid wood to fibreglass. Choose a finish that will look beautiful, as well as being durable and hardy in all weather conditions.
  • Research to company. Buy your garage doors from the right person, and you won’t be disappointed. You should look them up online and make sure you have a good idea of the quality they provide – in terms of service as well as doors. Look at their customer reviews.

Different types of door to choose

Garage doors come in various styles. These are the options you can choose from:

  • Up and over doors. This is the most simple style and probably the most common, especially in new builds. You will open the door by swinging it outwards, and it will need plenty of space to open. Up and over doors will come in lots of different materials, including fibreglass, aluminium and timber.
  • Sectional garage doors. As the name suggests, these doors are made up of different sections of material. They fold up into the top of the garage to save space and can be powered using a remote control, so that they are easier to use.
  • Roller shutter doors. These are high tech and slick to use. They also open up into the top of the garage, but they are one sheet of material. They will usually be electric, though manual roller doors are not unknown.
  • Side hinged doors. Opening outwards for a more aesthetically pleasing and traditional appearance, side hinged doors are great for pretty properties and owners who are interested in looks.
