What is a Roller Garage Door and What Makes it Different?

A roller garage door uses a particular mechanism to roll up into the ceiling of the garage, so that it can be closed efficiently, effectively and conveniently. This saves a great deal of space and means that valuable space won’t be lost on the drive – perfect for homes that have smaller drives or that might have multiple cars they need to park on the driveway. The door will not open outwards like an up and over garage door, instead rolling directly up into the roof space. This is a wonderful space saving mechanism and can go a long way to making your garage space more accessible, convenient and usable.

A roller garage door works by having a roller mechanism, which rolls the sheet of metal up into the roof. This is different to all other types of garage door on the market: they will either slide up into the roof space on tracks, or will open outwards/round the side of the garage. Up and over and side hinged doors are perhaps the least efficient in terms of space saving and a roller shutter door is, in many ways, the exact opposite of this. There are two main options to decide between when having a roller shutter door installed – electric doors, or manual doors. The main benefit of a manual door is that it will be cheaper to install. The main benefit of an electric door is that it will be easier to operate, and more simple and efficient. The choice is entirely yours depending on the situation.

Roller doors can also be highly secure, and very well insulated. Some doors will come with extra insulation – all are made from aluminium and steel, so will be very heat efficient. There are insulated and non insulated options depending on your requirements. While doors might have additional insulation, one of the main factors affecting garage door insulation, and particularly with roller shutter garage doors, is the fit. If there are gaps, this is where lots of cold air can get in, massively compromising insulation. A new roller shutter door will generally be made to measure so that it will not allow extra cold air in. For this reason, doors will be better insulated and will not come with the added difficulties of a poorly insulated door. Any time that you speak to a garage door company about a new roller shutter door, it is very much worthwhile checking if the door will be made to measure and if it will therefore not have the problematic gaps of older garage doors.

If there are gaps present and the door is not a good fit, this can also be detrimental to security. However, when fitted well, a roller shutter door will be particularly secure and good for a garage. This is because it will roll down into place and can be secured at the bottom, so there is virtually nowhere that could be a weak access point. This makes a roller shutter door one of the most secure options around.
